Paola is enjoying her school days in San Bruno, California, USA learning new concepts and building strong friendships. The teacher invests in a big new fish tank for the class to explore. Paola learns that fishes swimming in a group are also referred to as a school. The teacher introduces a new student, Jeremy, who joins the class after moving from another city.
Paola and her best friend Jennifer have been at this school and together in the same class since kindergarten. Both of them have many friends. Jennifer observes that Jeremy is getting familiar with the study curriculum and teacher. Jennifer also notices that Jeremy is a bit shy and has not made any friends yet. During a morning break, Jennifer asks Paola to join her to invite Jeremy to play with them. They ask Jeremy if he would like to join them at the playground during lunch recess. Jeremy is elated to hear this and happily acknowledges. Jennifer and Paola introduce Jeremy to the rest of the friends at the playground, and they have a fun time playing different games like tag, four square and hopscotch. Jeremy shares with Jennifer and Paola how he was nervous to approach new people, and how much he appreciates them including him. Jeremy further smiles and says he is reminded of a quote from his mother ‘A friend in need is a friend indeed’.
Paola learns that a good person consciously observes how anyone around them may be feeling lonely. The person then finds a way to alleviate their concerns and engage them in a thoughtful manner. How have you shown compassion towards a friend?
